The RWE/Tech Working Group was established at the DIGICORE meeting at
the Anatomical Museum in Utrecht in the fall of 2024. Following a year
of collaborative development, we are proud to announce our first major
milestone: the publication of a perspectives paper in ESMO Real
World Data and Digital Oncology:
AI Assistance in Tumor Multidisciplinary Teams
(2026). Remco Jan Geukes Foppen, Mindaugas Morkunas, Alberto Traverso,

This paper outlines a structured, multicentric roadmap for
integrating AI into Tumor Multidisciplinary Teams (MDTs) to resolve
current inefficiencies caused by manual data synthesis and static
documentation. By transitioning AI—specifically NLP and Large Language
Models (LLMs)—from simple assistive tools to integrated decision-making
partners, the framework utilizes a tiered approach of optimized and
foundational models to automate the extraction and synthesis of
unstructured data. Ultimately, the next step for this international
initiative is to bridge the gap between technical potential and clinical
practice, providing a validated, explainable process for standardizing
digital oncology workflows in the real world.
Call to Action: To ensure these AI frameworks are
grounded in diverse clinical realities, we invite clinicians,
researchers, and digital health experts to participate in the
development and execution of a DIGICORE wide survey mapping current MDT
operational processes. Your expertise is vital in identifying the
specific bottlenecks and data workflows that will shape the next
generation of digital oncology. Join us in defining the future of
multidisciplinary care by contributing to this foundational mapping
initiative.
